NMCI stands for The Navy/Marine Corps Intranet and according to the U.S. Navy website commercial webmail websites pose a threat to the security so these are banned from the NMCI. Many popular webmail providers like Yahoo, Hotmail, Google Mail and others are not accessible from NMC intranet since 2005.
The US Navy websites say that these webmail windows can help malicious software to enter into the government systems and increase vulnerability. However, still you can retrieve you mails through Microsoft Outlook. Let’s see how it is done for Yahoo Mail.
Open Microsoft Outlook
Microsoft Office provides the Outlook which is a perfect answer if you want to retrieve the emails. Additionally, you can even read the mails in an offline mode but for the new mails you have to connect to the internet.
So when the intranet doesn’t block the webmail, you can use this service. Firstly, open Microsoft Outlook and click on ‘Email Accounts’ and choose ‘Add a new email account’ and then select ‘POP3’.
Microsoft Outlook will ask you to update the user information in the next steps. You will be prompted to type your name so use the name that you would like to see on screen, a full name or nickname.
Outlook will also ask for the server mail, for Yahoo type ‘pop.mail.yahoo.com’ for incoming mail server and for outgoing type ‘smtp.mail.yahoo.com’ and make sure that you use correct spellings to avoid any configuration problem.
After setting up the server, now you need to enter the account sign-in details. Use your Yahoo email id and password so that Microsoft Outlook can retrieve emails for you. Make sure you enter the correct mail id and password.
You should now click on ‘Test Account Settings’. The system will run a test on your account details and if there is a problem, you will get an error message instantly.
But before running the test, make sure that you are connected to the internet. Obviously, it cannot check details without an internet connection. It is better that before running a test you check the details yourself very carefully.
After the verification of the email id and password, your account should be almost ready for work. However, you have to do some other settings too. Go to the ‘More Settings’ and then click on ‘General’ tab. Go to ‘Mail Account’ and type ‘Yahoo Mail’ there. Now select the ‘Outgoing Server’ and click on ‘My Account Server (SMTP) requires authentication’. Do the same for ‘Incoming Server’, click ‘Next’ and then ‘Finish’. Your settings will be complete after this.
Now perform a check to see if the mail account is working on Outlook. Tell a friend to mail you or use your military account to send mail at the Yahoo ID. Your mail should appear in the inbox within seconds. So now you can enjoy the webmail services without posing any threat to the national security.
