Amazing And Less Known OS X Keyboard Shortcuts

People may argue about the importance of keyboard shortcuts, given that mouse can do everything. However, for those who use computers for professional purposes understand the value of keyboard shortcuts. These can save valuable time and increase the productivity to achieve goals faster.

Moreover, you can also save yourself from the frustration and fatigue due to continuous use of mouse. However, users know about the general shortcuts so here are some of the lesser known ones. Use them with OS X for faster navigation.

Fn-Arrow Keys and Fn-Delete

Fn+ Arrow Keys can be a really helpful shortcut. Fn can be used Home with left arrow key, End with right arrow key, Page Up with up arrow key and Page down with down arrow key.

Fn when used with Delete key will help you to delete a character to the right of cursor. It works exactly like the forward delete option on the computer.

Ctrl-F2/F3

With the help of Ctrl-F2, you can instantly shift the focus to the Menubar and thereafter can use arrow keys to navigate and enter them to use them further.

Whereas with Ctrl-F3, you can access the dock and then select the arrow keys to navigate applications. Pres enter for using the application.

Ctrl-Cmd-D and Cmd-Q

Ctrl-Cmd-D is very useful for quick definitions as it will pop up a dictionary for the selected word.
Cmd-Q is a well known shortcut and it quits the current application.

Opt-Cmd-Escape

Opt-Cmd-Escape can be used when any of your application hangs and is not responding. This shortcut will open the force quit menu where you can force an application to close with help of the arrow keys and enter, thereafter.
Ctrl-Eject, Ctrl-Shift-Eject and Ctrl-Opt-Cmd-Eject

Ctrl-Eject will open the shutdown menu so you can choose to restart, sleep, cancel or shutdown the system. And Ctrl-Shift-Eject shortcut will set the display to sleep where as Ctrl-Opt-Cmd-Eject will help you to shut down the system immediately.

Finder Shortcuts

Enter will rename a selected file and Cmd-O will help you to open the selected folder in the finder. Shift-Cmd-N will create a new folder in the directory while Cmd-J will help you to alter the tweak setting of a specific folder.

Cmd-I will open the information panel for any selected item while Cmd-Delete will delete the file to trash. Shift-Cmd-Delete will empty the trash but you will get a confirmation about it. However, if you want to empty Trash without any conformation then use Shift-Opt-Cmd-Delete.

Some of the shortcuts can be really complex but you should try to use them as much as possible. After using these keyboard shortcuts for a number of times, you will get comfortable with all of them.

However, if you still face any difficulty then copy the shortcuts and keep them in a file at desktop and whenever you need one, just open the file and check the relevant keyboard shortcut. Also try to remove mouse from the system, this will also encourage your mind to look for the shortcuts and use them.
