Keyboard is a vital part of every computer. Every keyboard over a period of time when left uncleaned is choked with dust and dirt. It is essential to keep a keyboard clean so that all the functions in it will work perfectly all the time.
Here are some ways on how to thoroughly clean your keyboard. First and foremost, unplug the keyboard from your computer and remove the batteries in it. This has to be done without fail since some of the keys may malfunction as a result of power going through it while cleaning.
How To Thoroughly Clean Your Keyboard (Without Breaking Anything)
Cleaning the Keyboard Free From Germs
Germs can accumulate freely in the dirt present in the keys of a keyboard. To clean the keys free from the germs, use an alcohol based solution such as the Isopropyl which has more than 60% of alcohol content in it.
Do not use solutions such as ethyl, since it removes the letters from the keys along with the dirt in them. Soak a cloth or paper towel with the alcohol solution and gently wipe it over the keys. To clean the spaces in between the keys, use a cotton swab soaked with alcohol solution.
Cleaning the Keyboard Free From Dust
Dust can accumulate in the spaces in between the keys and also on the top of the keys in a keyboard. Use a soft dusting brush to clean the dust on a daily basis.
Also, a small air compressor or a vacuum cleaner may also be used to clean the dust in a keyboard. For more resistant dust, use a brush attachment of a big vacuum cleaner to remove the heavier dust.
Cleaning the Keyboard Free from Liquid and Food Particle Spills
Spilling coffee or coke by accident may make the keys sticky. The spaces within the keys may also be wet with the spills.
Use a wet cloth or wet cotton swab to remove the liquid from the keys. To clean the spaces in between the keys free of the spilt liquid, remove the keys using a screwdriver or a knife in case of a desktop keyboard.
If the keyboard that you possess is a customized one, then you should take note of the various key positions in the keyboard before removing the keys. For removing the keys in a laptop keyboard, use the nails in your fingers to remove the keys from its slot.
After you are done with removing the keys, use a cloth or paper towel soaked in an alcohol solution to clean the space underneath the keys.
To refit the keys after cleaning up, simply put the keys back in its original position and gently push it down in the slot until you hear the snap sound. For keys with metal bars such as the space bar, make sure that the keys are placed at the right slot and it lines up with the slot provided in the keyboard.
For spilling of food particles on the keyboard, follow the same procedure for removing the keys mentioned above and use a small vacuum cleaner to clean up the food particles that have spilt underneath the keys. For resistant food particles that have embedded on the keys, use a pencil eraser to clean it up. You may also use a toothbrush soaked with an alcohol solution to clean up the dirt in the keys present in the keyboard.
It is important that we keep the key board clean all the time free from dirt, germs and spills since it is one of the elements in a computer that we use most of the time in our day to day computer usage.
