Top 3 Ways To Free Up Disk Space in Windows 7

Often, the users of computers find it difficult to manage the disk space. No matter how big your hard disk is, there will be a time when you will look for some more space. These days, the external hard disk drives have significantly reduced this problem. Still, it has not eliminated the problem.

If the internal hard disk is crammed with files, it may render the system slow. At the same time, you will not be able to install new software programs or service packs. So, it is always wise to use your disk space intelligently. However, if you are running short of disk space, here are some tips that will help you free up some space.

Cleaning Up Unnecessary Files

Windows 7 keeps on backing up some files that help the system track the records and data. These files are not very important and they can be safely removed from the computer without disturbing the overall functioning of the computer. There are several ways through which you can get rid of the unnecessary files.

Using disk cleanup: To use this program, go to My Computer and right click on the drive where you want to free up space. Go to Properties and select the General tab. There, you will find the disk cleanup button. This will remove files saved temporarily. Using this, you can save a lot of space.

Delete temp files: This is another effective way to remove the temporary files. First click on Start and click on Run. Then, in the box, type %temp% and press Enter. This will open up a folder consisting of temp files. Select all the files and press Delete.

Remove cookies and unwanted cache: They can take up quite a large amount of space if not deleted regularly. To remove them, click Start and go to Search. Type inetcpl.cpl and press Enter. In General tab, select Internet Properties and click on delete under Browsing History. Before that, check all the boxes apart from Cookies.

Removing Unnecessary Software

If you are in serious need to disk space, you can consider removing software programs that you no longer use. In fact, if you make a logical survey, you will be amazed to see how many software programs are not required by you. So, you can easily remove them. For that, go to Control Panel from Start.

There, select the Uninstall a Program link. This will lead to the list of programs installed in your computer. From the list, select the program that you want to remove and click on uninstall button at the top.

NTFS Compression

This can save quite a lot of disk space; but beware – it can affect the performance of your computer. Generally, the data are decompressed in this format. However, when you copy or remove the file, it decompresses the files and moves it and then again compresses it. So, it is a good option if you are not going to copy or remove the folders in the computer. To decompress, select the folder, right click on it and go to Properties. Then, go to Advanced Option and click Compress.

You should always try the first option. If you desperately need more space in your hard disk, only then consider the last two.
